๐Ÿ‘‰The Podnews Report Card shows that Apple Podcasts is still our most favoured podcast platform; but all the scores for the major platforms have slipped since last year. We’ve published a full list of the results of the Report Card over here; and we’re sharing it with the platforms.
Podcast Movement

๐Ÿ‘‰In our Editor’s keynote at Podcast Movement Evolutions, unveiling the Report Card results, there was a special guest - Adam Curry, the co-inventor of podcasting. He spoke about RSS being “the honey badger of digital distribution - no matter what they try, they cannot kill it” - and also spoke about new features in Podcasting 2.0. The full video is available to watch here.

๐Ÿ‘‰Exclusive: The Airwave podcast network is to launch its own book imprint, Airwave Books. It will feature books by Airwave’s podcast and video content creators. There’ll be more information at the Airwave booth at Podcast Movement Evolutions at noon today.

๐Ÿ‘‰Correction: Yesterday, we said that the Locked On Podcast Network were represented by Libsyn Ads before they signed with Adswizz. We based this on a page on the Libsyn Ads website which sold “a full network buy” of the Locked On Network. That page was deleted after we published yesterday; and both companies say that Locked On did not work with Libsyn Ads, so we clearly got things wrong and we regret the error. We’re told they were with Spotify/Megaphone.

๐Ÿ‘‰Exclusive: How much are podcast downloads down year-on-year following the changes in Apple Podcasts? For Podnews, the leading podcast metrics company Podtrac has analysed more than 2.7bn downloads; and some individual categories fared very differently. Some of this data will be presented in our Editor’s opening keynote at Podcast Movement Evolutions, at 9am today in Los Angeles, just before Amy Poehler takes to the stage.

๐Ÿ‘‰The Ambies Awards took place last night. We’ve a full list of the winners, including podcast of the year Slow Burn and three wins for Weight For It. Our list includes hosting companies and links to the winning trailers.

๐Ÿ‘‰Today, Steven Goldstein will moderate the View from the Top panel for the ninth time. If you’re at Evolutions, it’s at 11am in Diamond 5, as part of the Industry Track, sponsored by Podnews.
First look: In podcast advertising, there’s “host reads”, “announcer reads”, and a new tool, “talent reads” - an ad voiced by talent from an existing podcast, but who is not featured in the specific podcast where the ad is inserted.

๐Ÿ‘‰New research released today by Gumball, ART19 and Signal Hill Insights shows that this “talent reads” format is an effective addition to an advertiser’s toolset.

๐Ÿ‘‰Podcast Movement Evolutions starts later today in Los Angeles. The first session is the orientation event for new and veteran attendees. The AMBIES awards take place at 6pm PT / 9pm ET tonight: here’s a live video feed for you to watch the ceremony wherever you are (or see your email from Podcast Movement to RSVP). We’ll have a full list of winners tomorrow morning; and some exclusive data ahead of the unveiling of the Podnews Report Card 2024 at 9am.

๐Ÿ‘‰Apple Podcasts has updated its Content Guidelines. The main changes are that the company now requires use of AI to be prominently disclosed in both the audio and the metadata; and AI cannot be used to mislead. (¶1.11 and 1.12) Apple also requires creator-provided transcripts to accurately reflect and correspond to the content (¶5.1).

๐Ÿ‘‰Similarly, YouTube is now requiring disclosure about the use of AI in certain circumstances. You’re specifically required to disclose if you’re using AI to “make a real person say or do something they didn’t say or do”, “alter footage of a real event or place”, or “generate a realistic scene that didn’t actually occur”. Visual (or, we presume, audio) effects, like noise reduction, are not required to be disclosed; nor “clearly unrealistic content”.

๐Ÿ‘‰Podnews does not use AI in any part of our editorial process.
